VIENTIANE TIMES 25 DECEMBER 2007

DEPUTY Minister of Foreign Affairs Phongsavath Boupha presented an Award of Merit to the Chief Technical Adviser of the International Law Project, Dr Peter van Krieken, last week in Vientiane at the end of his two-year mission in Laos.
Dr Van Krieken is from the Netherlands and has provided his expertise to the International Law Project over the last two years, helping to contribute to the development of the Lao PDR. The Project has recorded significant achievements in the development of international law and human rights and the capacity of government officials and other concerned parties at the central and local levels. The project works to support the Lao government in its consideration of international treaties, to improve the incorporation of these treaties into national legislation, and the implementation, enforcement and reporting of treaty obligations. Thanks to generous support from the donors, the project has been responsive to the real needs of the Lao people and government in the country's endeavours to become a fully fledged member of the international community and to strengthen the contribution of international law to the rule of law in the country.
